Physically clean up your computer.

Keep your system running at its peak performance and minimize dust build up

Physical Cleaning

Computer components generate heat, and need airflow to operate cool and properly. Almost all computers have cooling fans and ventilation to produce a supply of cool air for the system. Pet hair, lint, dust, and other airborne particles can get sucked in, and clog the computer. This can cause the system to heat up, and can pose a fire safety hazard.

In order to clean the computer, you can wipe off the exterior of the case and vents with a clean lint free cloth. Also, every few months open the computer case (tower, CPU) and blow the dust off everything with a can of compressed air (which can be purchased from any office supply or computer/electronics store).

  • Be careful not to touch any of the circuit boards
  • Make sure to keep yourself statically grounded to prevent static shock from damaging any electronic components.
  • Do not use a vacuum cleaner inside of your computer case, as this can generate static electricity. use the canned air Blow the dust outside of the computer then vacuum it up. Or, just blow it out outdoors.
  • LCD monitor cleaning.

Do not use any cleaners on an LCD monitor (such as Windex) unless you have a cleaning solution specifically for use on LCD monitors. You can lightly wipe the monitor with a clean, lint-free cloth, but wipe very gently and make sure not to press too hard, as you can damage the screen.

    Keyboards

Computer keyboards can get very dirty and disgusting. Use the same canned air from the first section to blow the keyboard out between the keys. Also turning the keyboard upside down or on end while doing this helps loose particles fall out.
